Farmers' Markets

The colourful bustle of a Farmers’ Market is a great way to meet the locals and sample the diversity of New Zealand’s artisan food and fresh produce. With over 50 operating throughout the country, they’re a window on the NZ regional heartland and a must-do for locals and travellers alike.

More on Farmers’ Markets

Farmers’ and growers’ markets are part of the quiet revolution that is rediscovering a traditional model of local food production and distribution that has waned over the past 50 years under the pressures of globalism and an industrialisation reliant on cheap fossil fuels.

Farmers’ markets are food-only markets (with some exceptions for plants and flowers) taking place on a weekly basis where those who have grown or made the food sell it directly to consumers. Produce, catches and artisan food wares are from a defined local area. More information can be found at Farmers’ Markets New Zealand (FMNZ).

Within our listings there numbers of farmers’ and growers’ markets that are not part of the FMNZ but still adhere to the same principles. See also the City Markets & Festivals category for other food markets.

These markets are growing and changing so check their websites for the latest information.
