Christchurch Urban Foraging

2025 UPDATE

Most of the links that were on this page created back in 2011, either no longer work or no longer point to the actual urban foraging maps that were previously active.

If you have any updated information on urban foraging in the Christchurch area, do let us know.

In the meantime the most promising resource we have found is this quite comprehensive Christchurch Fruit tree map maintained by the Christchurch City Council: https://smartview.ccc.govt.nz/data/fruit-trees

Have fun out there!

Links of interest that still work:
RNZ article on a ‘new’ map from Jan 31st 2020. The article is live but the link to the ‘online food map’ no longer points to an actual map: Christchurch free fruit and nut map offers flavour to foragers

This used to point to a Christchurch City Council Fruit & Nut Map: https://smartview.ccc.govt.nz/#map/layer/trees/ – it now redirects to the home page of the CCC ‘Smartview’ website.

The Otautahi Urban Foraging Facebook page run by Joanna Wildish may have some useful information: https://www.facebook.com/Otautahi.Urban.Foraging

Links of interest that no longer work:
This used to be (Jan 2020) a foraging map for Christchurch. Now gone: Google map.

A blog post on urban foraging in Christchurch, no longer live: https://www.cityscape-christchurch.co.nz/blog/food-drink/entry/nature-s-bounty

We have a group of round white top small mushrooms growing in our lawn. Never seen them before. Not interesting in eating them but want to be very careful as my sister has dogs that visit me. We are in Bromley/Woolston area of Christchurch. They have low stems and scattered not in a circle. They about the size of the ball on a shuttlecock. Give me a ring if you think you may know about them. We are considering fostering a puppy so dont want something bad in our garden.

Can we plant fruit trees in the redzone?

Is there a guide to doing this - tree spacing, underground keepout area, away from kerbs, etc.

Hi Robin - you're right, looks like the map has disappeared.

Best bet may be to contact the group via their Facebook page - see above.
