Community Garden and Food Hub, Phase I and II
What is the project?
Ōtākaro Orchard is the working title for a high profile central city community garden and cafe in Christchurch, showcasing the post-earthquake food resilience of the Garden City.
A highly visible, accessible, engaging, beautiful and unique destination in the North Frame of Christchurch’s central city for locals and visitors alike to gain inspiration, knowledge and wisdom about sustainable food systems in practice. We will build on the history and future of this space as a food producing source/mahinga kai.
We have designed an orchard and garden by the community and for the community. In addition, we are building a temporary structure to act as an information centre for the Food Resilience Network and a cafe operated by a collective of five social service agencies. About 30 organisations have jointly developed this project – which will adjoin the earthquake memorial at the former PGC site and point to a brighter future for the Garden City of New Zealand.
