Over the past 20 years the Nelson City Council has planted hundreds of fruit and nut trees in publicly accessible places, aimed at not just growing an attractive variety of trees, but providing a bounty of crops for residents to enjoy.
The Marlborough District Council has also planted edible fruit trees on public land in Marlborough as part of the Council’s commitment to providing resources for the community good.
Thanks to the work of the NPA’s Open Orchards group, which has ongoing involvement in this project, there is a Google map showing the locations of these fruit and nut trees in the Nelson and Marlborough regions.
What a fantastic resource which not only provides a community harvest but is helping new generations discover the excitement of fresh, locally grown produce.
Both councils offer some advice: Be fair, take just your share… leave some for others!
