Community Gardens in New Zealand

Community gardens are typically owned by a trust, organisation or local government and run as not for profit ventures. They are managed and maintained by the gardeners themselves and provide fresh produce and plants as well as satisfying labour and a sense of community and connection to the environment.

The ‘Goodies’ at Good Magazine have created a collaborative Google Map of community gardens in NZ.

Golden Bay Community Organic Gardens

The Organic Gardens began as a project of the Golden Bay Work centre and were incorporated as the Te Wharerangi Trust in July 1991.

The gardens consists of 2.2 hectares in central Golden Bay including a Diversified Garden production area, Educational Worm Farm, Fruit and Nut Trees, Shelterbelt and Woodlot, Celebration Area and Herbal Ley

In July 2010 the opportunity arose to establish a community garden on a pocket of Tasman District Council-owned land on Old Wharf Road, Motueka.

Our aim: To provide a community food production garden in Motueka for the sustainable production of organic food through time.

Visit us at the Motueka Community Gardens in Old Wharf Road every Sunday at 1 pm when community gardeners meet.

The Waimarama Community Gardens are public organic gardens situated in The Brook Valley, Nelson.
